News - Grand Canyon the place for Black Dyke Festival

A brand new work by Paul Lovatt-Cooper will get its world premier at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music on January 28th 2011.

Paul who is the Composer in Association with the world famous Black Dyke Band has composed the piece for Black Dykes programme at the annual Festival of Brass. The piece is entitled “Starburst and Canyons” and it takes the listener on a musical night flight through the Grand Canyon.

Talking about the piece Paul said “For many years I’ve had a very large framed panoramic photograph of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and often dreamed about what the place would be like to visit. Even though I haven’t had the opportunity to go there yet I’ve often wondered what it would be like to fly through there at night with the warm Arizona breeze in your face.

The piece is fast and pacey with lots of momentum and there are lots of shock notes that jump out at you as if they were near misses during the flight. I am really looking forward to the performance and to hear it played by such a fantastic band”.
